Bridge of Flowers.

I got to the area of the opening ceremony early to make sure I got to see what was going on ,and the first thing I saw was the huge amount of flowers that had been laid on the Millenium bridge from the Gateshead side,right across to the Newcastle side.

Royal Station Hotel.

The Royal Station Hotel is situated right next to Newcastle central station(of course!) and was opened in 1858 by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Aswell as very grand hotel it has a trendy public bar downstairs to the left.

I love these signs.They are dotted around all over the city centre but I bet most people dont even see them. Yet again you can see the 'castle' on top of the sign.

Police funeral.

A very sad story behind this image. The police are setting up for a funeral the following day.A fellow officer was killed in the line of duty,and he was a very popular family man. The church where the service took place is just out of shot on the left.

Since I set this photo up I discovered I had been beaten to this by a rather irate Scotsman HI GRANT !! Funnily enough I think sales of Mars/Believe have gone up in England.

Only 2 days to go and I'm starting to get really excited about the biggest sporting event in the world.( I know some people say it's the Olympics,but I don't agree). This car really made me laugh.Everywhere you go at the moment England flags are flying.The owner of this car obvioulsy has a Scottish wife,or husband and wasn't going to allow just England flags on thier car!

Moving round to the other side of the roundabout we can see the Holy Jesus Hospital.It was built in 1681 but wasn't for sick people.It was a place for "reception and entertainment of pilgrims ,travellers or strangers". Swan House r'bout was built in the early 60's and thankfully this building survived it,although some other INCREDIBLE BUILDINGS didn't.(this picture borrowed from http://www.timmonet.co.uk/html/home.htm with thanks)

From where yesterdays picture was taken if you turn round you can see a sculpture that mimics the shape of the art outside the bar. In the distance you can just make out the top of the Tyne Bridge.

We are going to spend a few days around Swan House roundabout.The full name of this building is now 55 degrees North(after its line of latitude). Top left you can see,what used to be British Telecom offices,and are,( of course),now luxery appartments.You also have offices here and when you have finished work you can go to Bar 55 for a drink.

Theme Day-Car Park prices.

We are having another theme day today(as we now will on the 1st of every month) .I decided to 'cheat' today and show one cheap and one expensive.The one on the left is 50p an hour(about $1.00 and 75cents in euros).The one on the right(the one I use all the time) is a lot more expensive. I'm usually in here up to 6 hours so it costs me £7.70(or $15 and 11.25 in euros)
If I was going to bet on it my money will be on Ham in London to be the most expensive.

The local paper reported that over 40,000 people are estimated to have been at the free event. So these guys(and girls) who were giving away free cider had a very busy day.Needless to say there were a few people who maybe had too much!!

The yearly, ORANGE EVOLUTION FESTIVAL takes place over 12 days at various venues around the city,culminating in the free day at Newcastle quayside. You can just see the side of the main stage on the left and the smaller stage at the mid-right point,next to Spillers dog food factory. It was a great day (you can see it was packed) and although it was cold at least it didn't rain. I shall post more photo's on here and my other blog later in the week.

Although the Bigg Market is now just a party area with clubs,pubs,restaurants and take aways,its gets its name,not because of its size but because 'bigg' was a type of barley grown in the North-East of England. This area was used for selling and trading barley and wheat etc.

This is my son.On Saturday he had his football teams annual awards night. He won "opposition managers player of the year",which means he got more 'man of the match' nominations than any other player in his team.(That's the massive silver one). The other 2 trophys are for being a member of the league and also for being a member of his team-all players get those. His Grandma,Mam and myself were all there to cheer him on.

We have many parks in Newcastle,and this one is called Armstrong Park.At the entrance is what remains of this very old house,of which there is very little known. The SIGN ON THE WALL tells you a little more.

After that walk along the Ouseburn the best place to finish off is the TYNE BAR. This place has a great atmosphere,no idiots,wonderful bands on(inside and outside in the yard when the weather allows) and a free jukebox with blues,reggae,country,soul and punk.

The bottle you saw in my last post leads you down the Ouseburn path,and the
first thing of interest you see in the back of the '7 stories' childrens bookstore and education centre. This boat is outside on the river.What they use it for I have no idea,but isn't it great? It's a magical place for kids and many school trips go here aswell as family's.

This old quayside warehouse was going to be turned into (very expensive) accomodation.However a suspicious fire a couple of weeks ago has caused so much damage that it looks like they will be demolished completely.

This is the 'cattle shed' were all the big bands play in Newcastle. Everybody from Green Day and Pink have played here,but I have decided I will never go to another arena gig anywhere,ever again. You cant see-there is very little atmosphere and worse of all,the ticket prices are outrageous. Give me a small band in a small venue LIKE THIS anytime.

Driving through town on Tuesday, the traffic came to a stop. I noticed 2 guys cleaning the windows. Luckily my camera was on the seat next to me,although by the time I turned it on one was on the ground.

End of an Era.

I know not everybody likes football,but I make no apologies for posting this photo.Alan Shearer is a legend in Newcastle,and after nearly 11 years playing for his home town club he had decided to retire in 2 weeks time at the end of the season. He has had to 'hang up his boots' a couple of weeks early as he was injured last week. All he wanted to do as a kid was play for Newcastle United and score goals.Thats exactly what he did do, although its sad to say that he deserved to win somethng which he never did here.

This magnificent statue of Neptune welcomes you to the civic centre. As you can see he pours water on to himself and it drips down him and the wall. The reason for Neptune is due to Newcastle's long history with the sea. A LONGER VIEW is here.

I waited about 40 mins to get this shot but just couldnt get what I wanted...still this is ok I suppose. This poster is for the film/movie,Goal! (WATCH A TRAILER here). It is about a Mexican who moves to L.A and gets chance to play for Newcastle United. The film is ok,but the main reason for seeing it is how stunning Newcastle looks on it. I always joke that the film was directed by the 'NEWCASTLE TOURIST BOARD'. It makes my city look amazing.

On my post from Wednesday 'anonymous' mentioned in the comments that "Dog Leap Stairs" was were Bessy Surtees escaped with her lover in 1772. This magnificent building was where she eloped from. The local council paid £270,000 for this street art. Nearly everybody hated it!! It got so bad at one time the council said that anybody wanted it they could have it for free! Its now going to be moved to the nearby skate park.What the LOCAL PAPER said.

They are rebuilding part of Eldon Square shopping centre on this photo(centre-left).The green boxes are the workmens huts. You can also see the war memorial,but the reason for posting this is to show you were all the goths,skaters,punks and rockers hang out on a Saturday.Ranging in age from about 10 to 20,all thats missing is Marylin Manson! (This was not a weekend as you can see only one goth walking across!)

This was my journey home from the airport last week.Although I wasn't moving there was a lot of camera shake due to vibrations from the engine.So to make it better I added some radial blur.I quite like it.What is your opinion on photoshopping images?
My other blog has an unrelated photo today but it MIGHT MAKE YOU LAUGH.

The whole of the country was in chaos yesterday with public transport suspended(you can see here the metro shutters are down),schools closed and public sector workers striking for BETTER PENSION DEALS. Im posting this picture for three reasons. 1,because the show opens in Newcastle today.2. Because I think Sharon Osbourne is great and 3,and most importantly,its not that long ago that there would be outrage on the streets of Britain that this "sort of thing" was allowed to even exist!!

This beautiful pillar is the other side of Central Arcade from THIS EARLIER PICTURE.As you can see there is one at each entrance.The arcade was built in 1840,but after a terrible fire ,was rebuilt in 1906(hence the date at the top of the column). BLACKFRIARS is bang in the middle of one of the busiest party areas and Chinatown,right in the city centre.Built in 1250,by Franciscian Monks,with the city walls going through in 1262(foreground). After many years of wanting to knock it down,in 1974 the council finally decided to save it.Now housing craft shops and restaurants,it was re-opened in 1981 by the Queen Mother.Go here for TWO MORE VIEWS

This used to be a very ordinary staircase then the wood was added and now it looks great.A work of art in itself.People use it to get to the area's East of the city,and out of the city centre as it leads to a car park.There used to a great bar at the top. Go here to see a FULL VIEW

THE WORLD HEADQUARTERS is a night club with a difference--no dress restrictions,no rip-off prices,no trouble and no gorillas on the door.They play soul and jazz and hip-hop and just about anything else that you can dance to. Not my type of music but I know plenty of people who love this place. And dont you just love the name of the building ? Go here for ANOTHER VIEW

ok. This boot is here to advertise a shoe and boot shop in the Grainger Market that is behind the boot.The store is known as the 'Doc Shop' because its the best place in town to get Dr Marten boots.They have always been associated with skinheads but(no disrespect intended) dont let that put you off.They last for ever and are very very comfy! Thanks again to HAM(top bloke!)

Northern Goldsmiths building.

It might look quiet for a Saturday night but there is only one bar on this street. Also you will notice that there is a Police van in the distance--that wont be the only one !!The Northern Goldsmith building always looks good at night and has been lit up as long as I can remember. The council of Gateshead want to knock down this incredibly ugly building(understandably) but there are a lot of people (and not just in this area, but around the WORLD) that want it to stay.Anybody know why?

BYKER WALL was built at the end of the 70's and comprises 620 maisonettes..It was designed by Ralph Erskine and has recieved many awards.I think it might be unique in the UK. Some people love it,some hate it. Me? I'll let you make up your own mind.
